Nanocrystalline Soft Magnetic Powders

Dr. H.R. Maddah Hoseini, faculty member of Sharif University of Technology, produced magnetic powders by mechanical milling.

He, in an interview with Iranian Nanotechnology Initiative news agency on the details of the project, explained that magnetic behavior of the materials was one of the properties which could be subject to great changes on nanoscale. However, the magnetic behavior of nanocrystals against bulk materials was improved much, something caused by an increase in the electrical resistance and a decrease in magnetic anisotropy and magnetic domain wall effect on nanoscale. Also, in soft magnets, there was a considerable drop in the level of magnetic resistance. Soft magnets are used in all magnetic cores such as electric circuits, electromotors, and car ignition systems and oil pumps.

In the research, however, the production of nanocrystalline magnetic materials and the mixing of the alloys are accomplished by mechanical alloying. But the conventional method to chip Fe-Si alloy structure is melting method which needs elements like boron (B) which has a negative effect on the alloy. In contrast, mechanical alloying does not necessitate boron and improves alloy properties.

Dr. Hoseini collaborated with Dr. Parvin Abachi, a researcher at Sharif University of Technology, and Abas Bahrami in the project. The results were published in Materials Processing Technology, vol. 203, pp 554-560, 2008.
